Setting up Workflows

DryMerge is a YAML-based configuration format used to define workflows. We focus on defining two things: the infrastructure used to kick off the workflow and the shape of the workflow itself. 

JSON templating is, simply put, copying objects from one JSON object into another JSON object. In the context of DryMerge, we have a `context` object that contains a bunch of data we'd like to transfer into a more functional object (such as an API call). JSON templating makes DryMerge declarative, so let's look into how we can use it. For the rest of the section, assume we're using this sample `context` object. If it helps your mental model, pretend this is the result of an API call to an endpoint like `/households/1234`

Templating

Entities are the constituents of a DryMerge workflow (think of them as nodes in a dependency graph).

Entity Basics

DryMerge workflows are dependency graphs, in which there are are different types of nodes. Nodes are building blocks and do a certain logical operation, such as an API call, function call, data manipulation, or basic control flow. Data passed between nodes is stored in a context, which is a JSON object that can be accessed and modified by nodes. We'll go through all the types of nodes below...

Node Types

DryMerge supports infrastructure to autonomously kick off workflows when events happen or on a schedule. The two types used to accomplish this are `Triggers` and `CronJobs`, and they're declared in the `infra` section of a DryMerge configuration file.

To reduce boilerplate and tap into the ecosystem, DryMerge supports importing external entities with modifications you'd like to make applied to them. Furthermore, DryMerge supports the definition of `templates`, which can either be imported or called via an API/SDK to programmatically generate entities without defining redundant YAML.

Imports & Templates

DryMerge workflows are typically invoked via the `api.drymerge.com/execute/[id]` endpoint. Initiating this endpoint causes DryMerge to set up the API Graph rooted at the provided ID and starts the execution based on the DryMerge configuration. They can also be manually invoked via the CLI with `dry run [id] --file [path-with-args]`.

Running Workflows

DryMerge allows you to connect arbitrary functions defined in any language to your workflow -- this allows you to integrate arbitrary existing code (regardless of whether you've hosted it in the cloud, on serverless, behind a VPC, or even on localhost)  to your API graph. This is powerful, since it allows you to (1): trigger highly internal tasks that don't expose APIs when any (external or internal) event occurs.

DryMerge is a fairly complex engine. That complexity comes with expressive power, but it can be hard to absorb everything and get started. We've put together some examples of how you can use DryMerge to solve common problems. Oftentimes, it's sufficient to provide a few examples to an LLM and ask it to make yours with the others as a basis. Or, ask our docs to do it!
